About Baja California

Baja California or "Lower California" is a peninsula in the west of Mexico. It extends some 775 miles (1250 km) from Tijuana in the north to Cabo San Lucas in the south, separating the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California (or "Sea of Cortés"). In the minds of European explorers, California existed as an idea before it was ever discovered. The earliest known mention of the idea of California was in the 1510 romance novel Las Sergas de Esplandián by Spanish author Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo. The book described the Island of California as being west of the Indies, "very close to the side of the Terrestrial Paradise; and it is peopled by black women, without any man among them, for they live in the manner of Amazons." Excerpt from Wikipedia. The peninsula is divided into two Mexican States - Baja California in the north (sometimes called Baja California Norte) - whose capital is Mexicali - and Baja California Sur (BCS) - whose capital is La Paz.

Alex Brumbaugh Photography and Baja California Pictures

I now spend my time between Todos Santos in Baja and Santa Barbara, California. During my time in Baja, I am inspired to take pictures to try to capture the land's gallant, ferocious, and sometimes elegant beauty. "The very air here is miraculous," wrote John Steinbeck in 1940*, "and outlines of reality change with the moment. The sky sucks up the land and disgorges it. A dream hangs over the whole region, a brooding kind of hallucination." My favorite pictures are incorporated into my photography which comes in many forms. Below you will find links to many of the photographs, pictures, and artwork of Baja California that I have created. (Click here to read "Day of the Frogs")
